What’s the story behind EducationDisrupt.fm?

Why did you start this podcast & movement?

First, listen to this Episode 1, because it tells the entire story for context.

Now here’s the quick story…

I am a born educator. And I fucking hate seeing kids struggle when we have the resources and knowledge to do better. It’s absolutely inexcusable and abhorrent that in today’s world we do such a shitty job meeting the needs of all kids. I want to make a difference, and this is one way I try.

So I built this podcast to explore one massive question, “What do kids really need?”

Every speaker, episode, and topic is a deep, intense, raw dive into that one question, from different angles.

Who is it for?

Adults 18+ who want to hear deep, raw, heavy conversations about the good, the bad and the ugly in the education world, so they can be more informed and empowered to support kids.

This is for parents, teachers, administrators, tutors, therapists, psychiatrists, activists, professors, counselors, paras, grandparents, etc..

Who is it not for?

Kids under 18. It’s too intense and not appropriate.

People who don’t care about questioning the status quo in education.

Those offended by cussing.

What are the episodes about?

All episodes explore the question, “what do kids need?” We examine issues in depth.

What are the 4 main types of episodes?

  1. 1. Solo shows: Here I explore a topic on my own.
  2. 2. Expert interviews: Here I interview people with expertise in an area.
  3. 3. Other interviews: Here I speak with people with relevant stories to tell.
  4. 4. Anonymous interviews: Here I talk with people who have important stories to tell, but who want to remain anonymous. Often teachers or school staff want to share, but are afraid of the repercussions of telling their stories. Often parents are afraid to speak up because they are afraid that the school will somehow take it out on their child. Either way, I hear teachers and parents sharing stories with me, that they wish they could share openly so that they could create change. But people are often not heard. Systems do not usually like people who rock the boat. I do not alter the voices of interviewees, but I do exclude any information they wish to exclude.

How long are the episodes?

However long they need to be to say what needs to be said. Some are longform, some may be only a few minutes.

Why is it raw?

I’ve been in education for a very long time. I do a lot to try to improve things, my life is dedicated to serving kids. I want a place where I do not conform and I get to speak my truth freely, however it comes out, where I can let go and be me 100%, where I can speak my truth passionately, unfiltered, raw, honest, unedited.

So this is that place.

It’s not for everyone, and that’s not the goal of it.

If you like it, this is for you.

If not, there are plenty of other people doing good work on behalf of kids.

Who are you?

Honestly, it’s not important who I am right now. What is important are the messages in the episodes that help us help kids. Listen and you’ll find out who I am if you want. But I hope you’ll just focus on hearing the message.

What about the web design?

I have done a lot online with youtube, podcasts, websites, programs, etc.. This is really a labor of love for me, a passion project that I’ve dreamt about for years. I have ideas that are begging to get out. I am using a minimalist design with the bare essentials, because it’s about the message and it’s about the kids, not the design or anything else. So I designed this to not be flashy or polished, but to be humble, simple, clean and easy to find what you’re looking for. Much of my inspiration for this design is Derek Sivers https://sive.rs/

What about editing, intros, outros, music, show notes?

Nope. Just basic show notes so you have just enough information.
